Albert Calmette

 
Albert Calmette served as physician in the Public Health Committee of the French Colonies and was a student of Louis Pasteur. He ranks high among the distinguished men of the International Network of Pasteur Institutes. Along with Camil Guérin, he became widely known for his discovery of the anti-tuberculosis vaccine (BCG). His rich scientific work has resulted in the application of the vaccine against cattle small pox, further improvement of the anti-rabies vaccine, and research on reptile venom that led to the discovery of the antidote for snake venom...

Greek Benefactors

 
The Hellenic Pasteur Institute owes its beginnings to the generosity of Sir Basil Zaharoff. A grant from the Greek benefactor provided the funds for the acquisition of the buildings and the equipment. Prominent patron of the Greek nation and generous benefactor of The Hellenic Pasteur Institute, Elias Voltos was born in Zagora (Pelion, Greece), he settled in Egypt at the end of the 19th Century where he became a prosperous cotton merchant. The Premises

 
HPI is situated on a privately owned wooded area extending over 14,000 m². Its buildings cover an area of 6,500 m². The title to the land on which HPI installations stand was transferred to the Institute by notary deed on May 4, 1919 from the heirs of Theano Rikaki, for the sum of 340,000 drachmas, the value amount having been established by the War Ministry’s official real estate experts. The area included an estate of several houses; a chapel consecrated to Saint Anne, and even a small table tennis pavilion....
