The Transgenic Technology Unit of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics has been operating as an organized Transgenic Service since 1996. The technologies offered are developed within the framework of the research activities of the Laboratory, and for that reason are continuously updated and supplemented with new technologies. It comprises a fully equipped laboratory/surgery and an independent animal facility for the breeding and maintenance of transgenic animals under specific pathogen-free (SPF) conditions.

Services include:

  • Distribution of the products of transgenic technology, specifically transgenic and knockout mouse lines that are internationally recognized as models for human disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, cachexia and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Development of transgenic products
  • Maintenance, breeding and genotyping of transgenic mouse lines
  • Transfer of mouse eggs into specific pathogen free conditions
  • Material characterization
  • Research & development of new model systems
  • Personnel training
  • Provision of advisory and consultancy service

The production and distribution of products to third parties is carried out under confidential contract agreements.
New areas of technology are under development with the ultimate aim to be included to the list of the offered services. These are:
  • Development of temporally - and spatially-regulated transgene systems in mice to study the precise function of genes-of-choice,
  • Transgene-based RNAi technology to achieve the knock-down of specific genes of choice in mammalian cells in vitro and in vivo in transgenic mice, and
  • Set up of mouse egg cryopreservation
