As translational research, FDA (Food and Drug administration-USA) and EMEA (European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products) are a new reality in Biomedical Research, Lab Animal Science has become a separate and very important field.  The Department of Animal Models for Biomedical Research of the Hellenic Pasteur Institute  provides Lab Animal Science as a specific, high quality service contributing to the humane use and care of animals and to the quality of animal experiments.
This high quality service is provided by the experienced and qualified personnel, the use of high technology equipment and the  animal facility, which all contribute to the tradition that makes HPI one of the leaders in Puplic Health services nationally.

  • Our Animal facility was the first one operating in Athens and was established at  1983. It is a two floor building of 800 sq.m with housing capacity for about 12.000 rodents. There are 5 Units offering general services and 3 Units that are utilized for  research and development projects associated with research laboratories.
  • Our main goal is to invest on the existing knowledge and expertise of mouse genetics and biology of our researchers by setting up unique quality services for basic or applied research purposes in National and International level. Furthermore, we wish to transfer our knowledge on state-of –the art- technologies to the scientific community as well as to the society through specific educational programs
  • Recent investments: infrastructure (high technology equipment), Building Reconstructions (FELASA- SPF conditions, barriers, ABSL2), recruitment of qualified personnel
  • Upgrade the function of our Facility: International Standards (3R’s, ISO, Institutional Animal care and use Committee, online mouse data base)
