The Transgenic Technology Unit comprises a fully equipped laboratory/surgery and an independent area in the animal facility for the breeding and maintenance of transgenic animals under specific pathogen-free (SPF) conditions. It has been operating as an organized Transgenic Service since 1996. The technologies offered are developed within the framework of the research activities mainly with the Lab of Molecular Genetics, and for that reason are continuously updated and supplemented with new technologies▫ Distribution of the products of transgenic technology, specifically transgenic and knockout mouse lines that are internationally recognized as models for human disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, cachexia and inflammatory bowel disease ▫ Maintenance, breeding and genotyping of transgenic mouse lines - ▫ Generation and characterization of transgenic, knockout mouse systems and temporally and spatially - regulated transgene systems ▫ Material characterization ▫ Research & development of new model systems ▫ Personnel training ▫ Provision of advisory and consultancy service
New areas of technology are under development with the ultimate aim to be included to the list of the offered services. These are: Development of temporally - and spatially-regulated transgene systems in mice to study the precise function of genes-of-choice, Transgene-based RNAi technology to achieve the knock-down of specific genes of choice in mammalian cells in vitro and in vivo, IVF and ICSΙ.
Preclinical evaluation of drugs using our in house transgenic, ko and mutant mouse models of infectious, inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases, such as arthritis, cachexia, Inflammatory Bowel disease, Multiple sclerosis, as well as induced cancer models
Transgenic, ko and mutant mouse resources | Many important therapeutic reagents against molecules of the TNF down
stream signalling pathway haw been tested in our internationally
established transgenic systems which are now used mainly for the
treatment of arthritis and IBD in patients |
Generation of transgenic mice after request or in terms of research collaboration

The CNS and transplantation Unit was recently established in HPI and is fully equipped for the in vivo delivery of biologics and cells using viral-based systems and the ex vivo transplantation of stem and Schwann cells, in numerous models of CNS injury and neurodegenerative/neuroinflammatory conditions in rodents. The Unit is fully equipped with stereotaxic platforms for small rodents, spinal cord compression device, nanoliter microinjector, electrocoagulators and mobile surgical stereoscope, for performing various models of neurodegeneration in mice and rats that include permanent focal ischemia (stroke model), traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries (compression and contusion), kainate-induced seizures (epilepsia) and administration of 6-OHDA and MPTP (Parkinson’s disease). Also, behavioral tests to monitor. The Unit is equipped to perform a comprehensive battery of behavioral tests to phenotype overall motor and sensory function of rats and mice as well as phenotype specific behaviors that are of interest to the investigators (Rotarod, open-field and paw-inking)
