Our aim is to organize a 5-day course on Laboratory Animals Science (LAS), offering basic and updated knowledge on animal models, hands-on practice on basic experimental techniques in small rodents and lagomorphs and networking of scientists. The course program is structured based on Directive 2010/63/EU requirements for covering the Core Modules and specific Function A modules and also specific lectures referring to updated animal models of human and animal diseases. The increased concern of public opinion on animal experiments, the need to respect the 3Rs approach (Refinement, Replacement, Reduction) and to comply with international laws such as Directive 2010/63/ EU “on the use of animals for scientific purposes”, imply the implementation of appropriate training in Laboratory Animals Science.
The course will include lectures from 24 field-experts, practice of gentle handling and basic techniques on LAS and cultural, social events. This course is financially supported by the Institut Pasteur International Network (RIIP), and therefore is referred as LAS-RIIP course. The practical session will be performed in the officially approved facilities of the Department of Animal Models for Biomedical Research of Hellenic Pasteur Institute that operates in line with the EU and international laws, FELASA recommendations ARRIVE guidelines and Basel Declaration Society.
The assessment of learning outcomes (http://ec.europa.eu/environment/ chemicals/lab_animals/pdf/ Endorsed_E-T.pdf) will be made through a multiple-choice and/or short-answer questionnaire that will be answered at the end of the course. It will be assessed by the scientific committee on the last day of the course. Certificates will be issued to the successful candidates. The assessment of the quality of the course will be made by each participant through an evaluation sheet.
The course is addressed to PhD-students, Post-doctoral fellows in life sciences, early-stage researchers and technicians who are RIIP or non-RIIP members and are involved in Laboratory Animals Practice. All interested participants have to complete the course application form to enter the selection process. Selection priority will be given to RIIP applicants.
Two grants will be given to selected trainees, by completing the grant application form.
Total number of participants is limited to 20 persons.
Applications should be submitted by 6 February 2015, by e-mail to email@example.com
